Honour based violence is a crime or incident which has or may have been committed to protect or defend the honour of the family and/or community.

Examples of honour-based violence

Honour-based violence includes:

  • physical abuse (kicking and beating);
  • psychological pressure (strict monitoring, humiliation, threats);
  • forced marriage;
  • abandonment (leaving someone in their country of origin or sending them back there);
  • forced suicide;
  • honour killing (murder).
